Zaniyan Sanctuary

Home / Zaniyan Sanctuary

Zaniyan Sanctuary is located on 40 acres of forest land near Cottage Grove, Oregon. It is adjacent to Fern Hill Nursery and Botanical Sanctuary, also a member of the United Plant Savers Botanical Sanctuary Network. The Network’s mission is to protect native medicinal plants of the United States and Canada and their native habitats while ensuring an abundant renewable supply of medicinal plants for generations to come.

In addition to forest land, Zaniyan is in the process of obtaining land in the Eugene area suitable for biodynamic and permaculture food growing with an emphasis on medicinal plants, and indigenous foods and ways of living.

On the 40 acres of forest land, we are working on developing a sustainable permaculture model, balancing the needs for cutting trees for fire breaks to protect the adjacent homes, with the need to protect the water, the plants, the wildlife and ecosystem.

Specifically the goals are:

1. Increase stand diversity and health by removing co-dominant and subdominant trees that are stunted, diseased, and suppressed, by favoring healthy and vigorous trees, and through encouraging the growth of intolerant tree species.

2. Improve and maintain wildlife habitat through the upkeep of meadow openings and riparian areas, identifying and protecting large woody debris and snags, and through the improvement and upkeep of hydrology for aquatic species and summer drinking water sources.

3. Create an environment to protect and foster the growth of endangered medicinal plant species.
