Practical Skills for an Uncertain World
Monday, December 7, 2026, at 5:30 p.m.
Siletz Tribal Center
2892 Crescent Avenue
Eugene, Oregon 97408
FREE and open to all community members!
What happens when the systems we rely on are disrupted? Join herbalist, retired midwife, author, and educator Daphne Singingtree for a lively, practical workshop exploring how herbs, gardening, food growing, and community knowledge can help us prepare for emergencies and build resilience in uncertain times.
What We’ll Explore
- Using familiar herbs for common illnesses and injuries
- Creating a practical home herbal medicine supply
- Growing useful food and medicinal plants, even in small spaces
- Choosing hardy perennial foods and herbs
- Saving seeds and sharing traditional and practical knowledge
- Preparing for emergencies through cooperation and mutual aid
The workshop will also explore how these ideas inspired Daphne’s Circle for the Earth speculative fiction series, which imagines a modern community suddenly transported into the past and forced to survive without the systems it once depended upon.
Hosted by the Confederated Tribes of Siletz and Zaníyan Center.
Books and herbal products will be available for purchase following the presentation. Proceeds support the work of Zaníyan Center.
Learning Together
For generations, people have shared knowledge through stories, demonstrations, hands-on experience, and community gatherings. At Zaníyan Center, we believe education should be practical, accessible, and rooted in respect for the Earth and one another.

Our educational programs bring together traditional knowledge, contemporary research, and practical experience. Whether learning to prepare herbal medicine, grow food, or respond to emergencies, participants gain skills that strengthen both individual and community resilience.
Conference Presentations
Education extends beyond the classroom. Daphne Singingtree has shared her knowledge at science fiction conventions, permaculture conferences, integrative medicine gatherings, and other conferences and community events.
Her presentations explore speculative fiction, alternative history, Indigenous perspectives, environmental stewardship, herbal medicine, midwifery, and community resilience.
